Therapists & Counselors

This category is broader than the “Professional Assessment” list above (which focused on addiction-specific screening tools) — these are directories and credentialing bodies for finding and vetting a therapist or counselor generally, with addiction-specialty filters where available. Independently verify licensure through your state licensing board regardless of which directory you use — none of these directories perform live license verification themselves (NBCC’s Counselor Verify is the one exception on this list).

1. GoodTherapy — Find a Therapist — Searchable directory filterable by location, specialization (including addiction), and credential type; explicitly includes Licensed Addiction Counselors alongside licensed therapists. [goodtherapy](https://www.goodtherapy.org/find-therapist-new.html)

2. NBCC — Counselor Find & Counselor Verify — The National Board for Certified Counselors’ public tools: one to locate a National Certified Counselor (including those with the Master Addictions Counselor/MAC credential), the other to verify any counselor’s certification is current before booking (NBCC Find, NBCC Verify). [nbcc](https://nbcc.org/search/counselorverify)

3. NAADAC — The Association for Addiction Professionals — The leading national credentialing and membership organization specifically for addiction counselors; a good starting point for verifying a counselor’s addiction-specific training ([NAADAC](http://www.naadac.org/)).

4. Open Path Collective — Nonprofit directory of 40,000+ vetted, licensed therapists offering sliding-scale sessions (typically $40–$80), aimed at people without insurance or with high deductibles. [openpathcollective](https://openpathcollective.org/how-open-path-works/)

5. APA Psychologist Locator — Directory maintained by the American Psychological Association; only lists licensed psychologists, giving a higher floor of verified credentialing than open, self-listed directories. [locator.apa](https://locator.apa.org/)

6. AAMFT Therapist Locator — Directory from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy; useful when addiction is affecting the whole family system, not just the individual. [aamft](https://www.aamft.org/AAMFT/directories/find_a_therapist.aspx)

7. SAMHSA Behavioral Health Treatment Services Locator — Confidential, anonymous federal locator covering outpatient counselors and therapists at licensed facilities nationwide, filterable by service type and payment option ([SAMHSA](https://findtreatment.samhsa.gov/)).

8. American Counseling Association — Counselor Finder — Directory from the largest professional association for licensed counselors in the U.S., useful for finding ACA-member counselors by location and specialty ([ACA](https://www.counseling.org/)).

9. Theravive — Directory focused on connecting people with low-cost and sliding-scale licensed therapists, including addiction and dual-diagnosis specialists. [helplinefaqs.nami](https://helplinefaqs.nami.org/article/255-i-need-to-see-a-psychiatrist-therapist-how-can-i-find-one)

10. Mental Health America — Finding Therapy — A curated hub linking to Psychology Today, Theravive, Medicare/Medicaid provider search, and specialized referral organizations — a good “if none of the above worked” fallback page for visitors. Accreditation (Joint Commission/CARF) and licensure (state) are two different things — a center can be state-licensed but not accredited, or claim accreditation without holding it.
